Word ran last September that “Cowboys and Aliens” seemed on the verge of casting Robert Downey Jr. as its lead, but now the star revealed to MTV News that he’s not certain he’ll be off to the Wild West anytime soon.
“I don’t know,” Downey responded to MTV News when asked whether the film was still on his radar. “I don’t know what I’ve got coming up.”
He went on to suggest that a potential “Sherlock Holmes 2” might fill his calendar, but where does that leave the Platinum Studios comic adaptation?
Though the “Cowboys and Aliens” comic was published in 2006, the concept has been in a state of pitch-flux in Hollywood for over a decade. The literally-minded plot involves an alien invasion happening in the Wild West with the Earth’s only defense being a group of cowboys and members of an Apache tribe.
If Downey’s enigmatic response comes off as a disappointment, fret not; you can still read the original comic in its entirety for free online. Granted, there’s no Robert Downey Jr. in it, but with the ever-increasing Marvel Universe and the potential “Holmes” franchise, we’ll be seeing quite a bit of him in the days to come.
