Can Downey Beat Ledger?
There are two serious threats to Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight") at the Oscars, who did not receive Golden Globe nominations today: Dev Patel ("Slumdog Millionaire") and Josh Brolin ("Milk"). If "Slumdog Millionaire" wins best picture at the Oscars, as many pundits believe, remember this: The top champ often claims an acting award. That means Patel, if nommed, must be taken seriously. In Brolin's case, he starred in the academy's best-pic champ of last year ("No Country for Old Men"), wasn't nommed, so he's got a big Oscar IOU. Also, Brolin just happens to be on a hot streak over all. He's got just the kind of momentum and cool factor that might tempt voters to pick him over Heath Ledger.

But a star with a mega-cool factor did make the Golden Globes lineup ... Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") He could also pose a serious challenge at the Oscars. What's fascinating about his run for these awards is the sharp contrast his personal story has to Heath Ledger's. In a sense, Downey is the anti-Ledger - he's a studly star who demonstrated serious acting promise when young, but didn't die tragically from drugs. In fact, he rallied in rehab spectacularly. Voters may find that a hopeful spin, especially considering this has been his break-out year with the surprise success of "Iron Man."

Another promising young stud who died tragically and got nominated at the Oscars (twice) didn't win despite having sentiment on his side: James Dean lost posthumous bids for "East of Eden" and "Giant." Spencer Tracy seemed like a shoo-in to win best actor at the Globes and Oscars when nommed posthumously for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," but lost. Peter Finch ("Network") won the Globe and Oscar posthumously, but he died immediately before those ceremonies. His loss was still weighing heavily upon their minds when voters were inking their ballots. In January, Heath Ledger will have been dead one year.

WB Releases "Sherlock" Productions Stills
Granted, there are only two of them but still, you can't say they aren't intriguing especially the second one where Robert looks like a scrappy cage fighter. They did say that this Sherlock was going to be darker and focus on the martial arts roots of the character, so here it the proof. Enjoy:

Even the LA Times Loves Robert
With the nominees for the Golden Globes coming out this week the Oscar frenzy has definitely begun from people guessing at who'll get a nomination, to guessing about what the celebrities might wear. The Los Angeles Times combined a list of the ten ways to make the Oscar telecast bright and out man was number 4:

4. Robert Downey Jr. Not all movie stars are dead weight when they go live. Downey is King of the Mountain right now, he's capable of speaking in full (and hilarious) paragraphs and his brain neither stops nor slows. Bring him up there with Russell Crowe, whom he parodied in "Tropic Thunder" -- who wouldn't tune in for that?

I know I'd certainly tune in...but then I'll be tuning in anyway. wink

Tropic Thunder Golden Globe Nod!
RDJ is now a golden globe nominee for his role in Tropic Thunder. Also nominated is his co-star Tom Cruise. Since Robert was by far the best thing in the movie lets hope the the Hollywood Foreign Press recognizes his brilliance and the tricky nature of his role and honor him on January 11!

Vote Kirk Lazarus For Best Supporting Actor

There’s been talk of an Oscar nomination for Robert Downey Jr.’s performance in Iron Man, but his best performance of the year was in Tropic Thunder as the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude. Unfortunately Paramount isn’t pushing Robert Downey’s performance for an Oscar, they’re pushing the performance of his character, Kirk Lazarus.

Can a fictional character win an Oscar? Probably not, but I’ll dream happily tonight of living in a world where something so awesome could exist. Paramount believes in that world too, since their entire Oscar campaign, complete with promotional ads, banners, and an Oscar poster is focused on getting Kirk his much deserved statue. I approve.

The Curse of the Sherlock Holmes Set
If it wasn't enough the RDJ nearly burnt himself to a crisp onset a few weeks back more accidents have been occurring onset:

A tanker truck explosion on the London set of Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes film caused actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to flee. The loaded tanker burst into flames while making a delivery, and the cast and crew exited while the set was closed down for two hours.

To top that off, Robert suffered an injury a few days later...

Robert Downey Jr. needed medical attention on the set of the new Guy Ritchie movie Sherlock Holmes - when he was knocked out by a giant wrestler.

The Iron Man actor was filming a fight scene with seven foot -tall co-star Robert Maillet when the big man threw a punch that left Downey Jr. "out cold." A nurse on set attended to the star and gave him six stitches in his mouth.

A source says, "Robert was accidentally caught on the chin by a thundering hook. He went flying and was out cold. He didn't want to go to the hospital and kept trying to get up. He's a trooper."
